No more paper trails: CJ Koome announces mandatory e-filing for all courts

The Judiciary has officially announced the complete implementation of directives on Electronic Case Management, as outlined in Gazette Notice number 2357, dated 4 March 2020, by the Chief Justice.
According to a notice released on Monday, 29 January 2024, the new electronic case management system is scheduled to be in full effect from February 2024.

In effect, the Judiciary requires parties to file all their documents through the e-filing platform. Parties were further told to provide one hard copy of the documents uploaded for Registry records. The Judiciary also advised Kenyans to contact them for direction following the implementation of the new system.
In the notice, they announced conducting a virtual training on the e-filing process on 7th and 8th February 2024. The notice directs court users filing cases on tax appeals to register themselves through a portal to log into the Judiciary system.
This move follows the background where former Chief Justice David Maraga pushed for e-filing in courts in 2022. Maraga emphasized the importance of digitizing Judiciary services, noting that it is a crucial step in leveraging technology for efficient service delivery.
Despite acknowledging challenges such as poor internet connectivity, Maraga urged judges and litigants to ensure stable internet connections. He also called on the Ministry of ICT to address connectivity issues in rural areas.
